Check out the 2023 Diversify Your Reading Challenge!
As we prepare for 2022, I am so happy that the Diversify Your Reading Challenge is bigger and more social than ever before. We’ve been through growing pains together – mainly my inability to finish a book in time to actually lead the discussion on it! – and made some tweaks and I now think that the Diversify Your Reading Challenge is in a great place for all involved. So whether you want to participate in the challenge on your own, join our bookish community on Facebook, or jump in on the occasional buddy read on Instagram, I’ve outlined all of the details for the 2022 Diversify Your Reading Challenge below. Have a think about how you want to be involved and then keep reading to find out how to join us. But first: the 2022 Diversify Your Reading Challenge genres!
2022 Diversify Your Reading Challenge Genres
For the 2022 Diversify Your Reading Challenge, we are introducing a new genre: Historical Romance. Romance is always a popular month in the Diversify Your Reading Facebook group, so I’m thrilled to include one of its most popular sub-genres in this year’s challenge, as well. Ever since Evie Dunmore released Bringing Down the Duke, I have watched the Historical Romance genre get more and more attention and I can’t wait to see what it’s all about!
We are also bringing back Young Adult in 2022. This is quite a polarizing genre, but I’m constantly impressed with the way authors explore important topics for Young Adult readers, and I look forward to checking out recent YA releases come August.
- January: Memoir/Autobiography
- February: Romance
- March: Fantasy
- April: Mystery
- May: History & Biography
- June: Thriller
- July: Contemporary Fiction
- August: Young Adult
- September: Literary Fiction
- October: Historical Romance
- November: Non-Fiction
- December: Historical Fiction

How to Participate in the 2022 Diversify Your Reading Challenge
We’ve experimented with new features and different formats over the years but, at its core, the Diversify Your Reading Challenge is an extremely straightforward and accessible reading challenge. To complete the challenge, read at least one book in the genre assigned to that month.
If you’re looking to get more social with the reading challenge, we now have two options: a monthly Facebook book club and a monthly Instagram buddy read. More on each of these options below:
Diversify Your Reading Challenge Book Club
The Diversify Your Reading Challenge Book Club is a monthly book club that takes place on Facebook. Each month, I select a book that matches the genre of the month and open up a discussion thread at the end of the month. These books tend to be backlist books that should be relatively easy to get from the library or purchase a secondhand copy of. I announce the books in bulk by quarter, so you have plenty of time to get the books you need to participate.
Diversify Your Reading Challenge Buddy Reads
If you’re a fan of new releases and popular books, you’ll probably love our monthly buddy reads on Instagram. At the beginning of each month, I announce a bonus book that we read together in the second half of the month. There’s an Instagram message thread for us to chat throughout the buddy read. Recent picks include The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling and Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino. Follow my bookstagram @diversifyyourreading to learn more.

I’m going to attempt to do in 2022 again. started too many challenges last year. Only doing 2 this year.
I’ll be joining again. This year has been fun challenging myself to complete this, it’s help me rediscover how much I enjoy reading. Will you be bringing back the quarterly challenge as well?
This looks really fun and easy. I never complete my challenges, but this one looks totally doable!! I’m really excited!! Do you have a printable of the forms you have in the picture above? I always love having them to put in my planner.
Joining for the first time! Just joined the Facebook group!
