The Diversify Your Reading Challenge is back for its FIFTH year! This genre-based reading challenge was just a little idea I had in my head back in 2019 and I’ve loved seeing others dive into exploring new genres with me. We’re keeping it super simple this year and revisiting some of the most popular genres from years past. Below you’ll find everything you need to participate in the 2023 Diversify Your Reading Challenge – the genre list, Instagram templates, printables, and links for further reading.

2023 Diversify Your Reading Challenge Genres
The 2023 Diversify Your Reading Challenge (DYRC) features a swing genre in October where you can choose your preference of Fiction or Non-Fiction. Based on your pick, the 2023 challenge will include 3-4 Non-Fiction genres and 8-9 Fiction genres. We’re also bringing back one of my favorite non-fiction genres: Self-Help. This is such a broad genre that you can choose something most relevant to your circumstances – I think that reading a self-help book is a great way to kick off the year and set you up for a <brilliant/productive/inspiring/insert adjective of choice> 2023!
Now, here we go…the 2023 Diversify Your Reading Challenge genres:
- January: Self-Help
- February: Romance
- March: Literary Fiction
- April: Memoir
- May: Young Adult
- June: Thriller
- July: Non-Fiction
- August: Contemporary Fiction
- September: Fantasy
- October: True Crime/Mystery
- November: Historical Fiction
- December: Science Fiction

How to Participate in the Diversify Your Reading Challenge
The Diversify Your Reading Challenge is an extremely flexible and entirely self-governed reading challenge. All you need to do to complete the challenge is read one book from the listed genre each month. That’s 12 books over 12 months.
Genre interpretation is completely up to you, as are any rules on length of book, how many of each genre you’d like to read, etc. You could even get creative and come up with some fun sub-genres each month if you want!
If you want to track your progress on paper, check out these printables!
Join the DYRC Community
In previous years, we have experimented with book clubs & buddy reads in addition to the reading challenge. I’m taking a year off from that in 2023, so the Diversify Your Reading Challenge Facebook Group will be dedicated to sharing book recommendations with others participating in the challenge. Hop over there if you want to join a community of fellow book lovers looking to expand their reading horizons.
You can also follow me on my book Instagram @diversifyyourreading to keep up with what I’m reading and to hold me accountable for completing my own reading challenge – I’ll be the first to admit I struggle to complete it most years!
