February New Releases on my TBR

written by Kelly Mongan February 3, 2020

We get an extra day of reading this month, which is the perfect excuse for treating yourself to an extra book!

February is usually all about romance for me, but there are a few non-romances coming out this month that have really caught my eye. Here’s a look at the February 2020 new releases on my radar:

Tweet Cute by Emma Lord

Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming — mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.

Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time.

All’s fair in love and cheese — that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life — on an anonymous chat app Jack built.

As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate — people on the internet are shipping them — their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected.

I love a good YA romance, and this modern take on “star-crossed lovers” sounds way too cute. Books that include letters or, in this case, Tweets, are also so enjoyable. And I love a good themed read, so romances are always on my list in February! I can’t wait to read Tweet Cute…probably in one sitting.

Release Date: OUT NOW! 1 February [Hardcover] | Pre-Order

Recipe for a Perfect Wife by Karma Brown

When Alice Hale leaves a career to become a writer and follows her husband to the New York suburbs, she is unaccustomed to filling her days alone in a big, empty house. But when she finds a vintage cookbook buried in the basement, she becomes captivated by its previous owner: 1950s housewife Nellie Murdoch. As Alice cooks her way through the past, she realizes that within the pages Nellie left clues about her life.

Soon Alice learns that while a Baked Alaska may seem harmless, Nellie’s secrets may have been anything but. When Alice uncovers a more sinister, even dangerous, side to Nellie’s marriage, and has become increasingly dissatisfied with her own relationship, she begins to take control of her life and protect herself with a few secrets of her own.

This book has been on my radar for so long! As I said with Tweet Cute, I love a book that includes snippets of some sort (letters, photographs, etc.). The incorporation of recipes here is surely going to send me into a baking frenzy, but I’m really just so keen to read about Nellie’s life and discover the big secrets! It sounds like a unique read that is already receiving a ton of praise, so I can’t wait to read it – I already pre-ordered!

Release Date: 4 February [Paperback] | Pre-Order (I did!)

When We Were Vikings by Andrew David MacDonald

Sometimes life isn’t as simple as heroes and villains.

For Zelda, a twenty-one-year-old Viking enthusiast who lives with her older brother, Gert, life is best lived with some basic rules:

1. A smile means “thank you for doing something small that I liked.”
2. Fist bumps and dabs = respect.
3. Strange people are not appreciated in her home.
4. Tomatoes must go in the middle of the sandwich and not get the bread wet.
5. Sometimes the most important things don’t fit on lists.

But when Zelda finds out that Gert has resorted to some questionable—and dangerous—methods to make enough money to keep them afloat, Zelda decides to launch her own quest. Her mission: to be legendary. It isn’t long before Zelda finds herself in a battle that tests the reach of her heroism, her love for her brother, and the depth of her Viking strength.

When We Were Vikings is an uplifting debut about an unlikely heroine whose journey will leave you wanting to embark on a quest of your own, because after all…

We are all legends of our own making.

First off, I’m a sucker for covers, so this immediately caught my eye because the colors remind me of the Beartown cover, so I had to check out the description. This sounds like such a unique story and I love a good quest storyline. Plus, who doesn’t love vikings?

The Bermondsey Bookshop by Mary Gibson

Set in 1920s London, this is the inspiring story of Kate Goss’s struggle against poverty, hunger and cruel family secrets.

Her mother died in a fall, her father has vanished without trace, and now her aunt and cousins treat her viciously. In a freezing, vermin-infested garret, factory girl Kate has only her own brave spirit and dreams of finding her father to keep her going. She has barely enough money to feed herself, or to pay the rent. The factory where she works begins to lay off people and it isn’t long before she has fallen into the hands of the violent local money-lender.

That is until an unexpected opportunity comes her way – a job cleaning a most unusual bookshop, where anyone, from factory workers to dockers, can learn to read and then buy books cheaply. A new world opens up, but with it come new dangers, too. Based on the true story of the Bermondsey Bookshop, this is the most inspiring and gripping novel Mary Gibson has yet written.

Novels that include bookshops always catch my eye, but I never end up actually reading them. I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of The Bermondsey Bookshop via NetGalley, so I’m already working my way through this one and enjoying it so far. It’s giving me slight Cinderella story vibes so I’m just sitting back and waiting for Kate to come out on top; I’ll just have to keep reading in order to find out!

Grown Ups by Marian Keyes

They’re a glamorous family, the Caseys.

Johnny Casey, his two brothers Ed and Liam, their beautiful, talented wives and all their kids spend a lot of time together – birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, weekends away. And they’re a happy family. Johnny’s wife, Jessie – who has the most money – insists on it.

Under the surface, though, conditions are murkier. While some people clash, other people like each other far too much . . .

Everything stays under control until Ed’s wife Cara, gets concussion and can’t keep her thoughts to herself. One careless remark at Johnny’s birthday party, with the entire family present, starts Cara spilling out all their secrets.

In the subsequent unravelling, every one of the adults finds themselves wondering if it’s time – finally – to grow up?

I feel like I write this about every single family drama involving adult siblings, but I. Love. These. Novels! From The Nest to The Most Fun We Ever Had, family dramas featuring adult children are always simultaneously relatable and extremely comforting (they really put my minor annoyances with my family into perspective!). I feel like family relationships are so complex so, if written well, they’re extremely captivating.  Also, does anyone else ever wake up after a night of heavy drinking and panic that you said something rude to someone at a dinner party? I can’t wait to hear what Cara has to say when she’s concussed!
